Probing Neutrino Production in Blazars by Millimeter VLBI

چکیده

The advancement of neutrino observatories has sparked a surge in multi-messenger astronomy. Multiple associations among blazars are reported while production sites located within their central (sub)parsecs. Yet, many questions remain on the nature those processes. next generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) is uniquely positioned for these studies, as its high frequency and resolution can probe both accretion disk region parsec-scale jet. This opens up new opportunities connecting two regions unraveling proton acceleration blazars. We outline observational strategies ngEHT highlight what it contribute to study

Very-long-baseline radio interferometry (VLBI) observations of gamma-ray blazars: results from millimeter-VLBI observations.

VLBI observations of the extremely gamma-bright blazar PKS 0528+134 at 8, 22, 43, and 86 GHz reveal a strongly bent one-sided-core jet structure with at least three moving and two apparently stationary jet components. At the highest observing frequencies the brightest and most compact jet component (the VLBI core) is unresolved with an upper limit to its size of approximately 50 microarcsec cor...

High-Energy Neutrino Production through Photopion Processes in Blazars

The measured spectral energy distribution and variability time scale are used to determine the radiation and magneticfield energy densities in the relativistic plasma that forms the gamma-ray emitting jet in the blazar 3C 279. Assuming that protons are accelerated as efficiently as electrons to a maximum energy determined by the size and magnetic field of the emitting region, we calculate the e...

Neutrino Oscillations and Blazars

Three independent predictions follow from postulating the existence of protons co-accelerated with electrons in extragalactic jets (i) multi-TeV gamma ray emission from nearby blazars, (ii) extragalactic cosmic ray protons up to ∼ 10 TeV, and (iii) extragalactic neutrinos up to ∼ 106.5 TeV. Recent gamma ray observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 employing the air-Cerenkov technique are consistent ...

Millimeter VLBI and Variability in AGN Jets

Millimeter-VLBI images probe as deep as never before the nuclei of AGN. VLBI at 147GHz yields transatlantic fringes for the first time. Now we can begin to study the relation between jet kinematics and spectral activity with a few ten micro-arcsecond resolution. 1. Present Status of 3mm-VLBI The main advantage of VLBI observations at short millimeter wavelengths (mmVLBI) is the very high angula...

Millimeter-VLBI with a Large Millimeter-Array: Future Possibilities

We discuss possibilities and improvements which could be obtained, if a phased array with a large number (N= 50 − 100) of sub-millimeter antennas – like the planned large southern array (LSA) – is used for radio-interferometry with very long baselines (VLBI) at millimeter wavelengths. We find that the addition of such an instrument will push the detection limit and the imaging capabilities of a...
